  • Rug hooking is both an art and a craft where rugs are made by pulling loops of yarn or fabric through a stiff woven base such as burlap, linen, or rug warp. The loops are pulled through the backing material by using a crochet-type hook mounted in a handle (usually wood) for leverage.

  • (Hooked Rug) This type of rug is made by pushing loops of yarn through a canvas backing. Making a hooked rug is a relatively quick and easy process and it is an affordable alternative to an authentic knotted rug.

Hooked Rug by Mom

Hooked Rug by Mom

My mother has macular degeneration. She loves to do crafts like needlepoint, but she can't see well enough to do them. The only thing she can do, besides knit, is hooked rugs. But she can't see the directions, so I typed them out, 99 lines of 116 stitches each. I e-mailed them to my sister who printed them out really large. Shelley (my sister) and I separated the yarns, which for some insane reason, come in circular bundles of multiple colors. My mother hooked the rug. She gave it to our friends Janet and Lew who have a country home. Their home was destroyed by fire last year and they just had a bigger and better one built. Janet's friend Ivy's mother finished off the back. She knew someone who added the rings and pole. I'm guessing Lew hung it, but I'm not sure.

This was a labor of love by many, many, many people. It turned into quite a group effort.

Last April included a trip to Vermont to visit Marsha's brother. While we were out there, Marsha took a class in traditional wool rug hooking - and was, well, "hooked". This is her current work-in-progress, a semi-circle hearth rug.
